Mike Hammer is hired to investigate a toxic chemical dump in the Hudson River by Patrick Dean, the man accused of the crime. It's a rough night at the table for Mike and some of his buddies on poker night. A wild card named Angel thinks he's getting hustled and tries his luck by pulling a gun on Hammer. After the last hand, the night turns to threats, theft, and even murder. Mike looks for suspects and an alibi while Barry Lawrence harasses him, Skip Gleason, and his other friends with a new scorched-earth policy against gambling.

Mike's old friend Simon has been dead for some time. At least, that's what everybody thought. When Simon shows up alive and wanting revenge, he needs Mike's help tracking down the person that tried to kill him.

After failing to save a tobacco company scientist scheduled to testify in court, Mike Hammer decides to quit smoking. However, a clean lifestyle becomes harder than he thought when he follows up on his client's murder. The dead scientist leaves behind questions about the killer's motives, his work at the company, and the tobacco industry at large. Of course, the nicotine withdrawals don't seem to help.

Mike Hammer is on the beat after the untimely death of former policeman Chic Farrell's death. After Mike finds Chic's son dead in a heroin house, the former cop is burning for revenge. Chic's own murder leaves Mike Hammer alone to find the killers, and the only witness is a strung out hooker who's on the run. The Russians and their steady supply of heroin to the city put them high up on Hammer's list of suspects.
